Uh-oh!

Dear Readers, here I go again presenting you with yet another cream/white/off white and black outfit but I simply can't help myself. At least I've accessorised in almost every possible way and as you all know I love accessories!
I adore this fur and as it's now officially cold, and one could say officially winter(well not technically but don't tell Mother Nature) I am getting a chance to wear it.

I don't think I can put this as eloquently as Rumi from Fashion Toast, so I will paraphrase here, but you can see her post in in entirety here:

'I know that people are really sensitive in regards to the topic of fur and just want to make it clear that I would never buy a new fur coat that supported modern fur industries, but I do think that when it comes to vintage it's more of a gray area and you're kind of just using something that would lay around unused otherwise. So vintage fur is a yes for me but I know that people have all kinds of different viewpoints and explanations for them, which I completely respect.'

Like her post that attracted many reactions I welcome yours as well and certainly do not intend to offend any of my readers out there.

Shirt: Vintage
Jeans: Evie

Winter arrived today....

So winter just seemed to arrive today, right on my doorstop and it meant a chance to wear this crocheted hat that my grandmother made. I didn't wear it for many years on account of the pom pom that I thought was a bit twee, but now I think it's what makes the hat fabulous.

I'm now on the look out for a similar black(of course) or pale blue version.
Whilst at the seaside, I picked up these brand new leather gloves that are fully lined for an unbelievable $25 because it was the last pair and the woman wanted to get rid of them. A little puzzled(wouldn't it be great if every 'last item' was reduced like the last pair of Chloe shoes in DJ's) I handed over my money before she changed her mind.

Do it the Lady Melbourne way

Sometimes I get asked to do styling work, and this shoot was one of them for a Melbourne photographer called Rachel Ernst. I will often source all the the clothes second hand/vintage, and occasionally thrown in some of my own stuff. You'll no doubt recognise the belt.

Amie Jo

So on one of my usual lane way shopping trips and whilst having lunch down Equitable Place(I dare you to find it), I came across this adorable shop called Amie Jo which has plenty of Australian and overseas labels on offer. I picked up this gorgeous Faith dress for under $100- I still can't believe it. I did ponder not telling you all about it because its such a treasure but that wouldn't be very kind now would it!
Anyhow, the owner was just so lovely to me that I'm going to do an interview and showcase so stay tuned next week.

Shoes: Payless(still getting used to that!)
Dress: Faith from Amie Jo
Coat: Salvation Army

p.s- So you all know, I am not paid by any shops or labels to represent, write about or promote their wears. This page is all about showcasing independent Australian shops, stylists, clothes and women, as well as a large dose of vintage.

LADY MELBOURNE'S RULES OF CIVILITY

Dear Lady Melbourne,
I sent a good friend of mine a birthday gift in the mail, and until today hadn’t heard a peep out of them.
I gingerly rang to see if it had even arrived, and was told, ‘Thank you, it has, love it!’
I was glad that my friend liked the gift, but was confused that they didn’t think to thank me, or even acknowledge the gift in the first place.
Was a text to much to ask?
Disappointed, Melbourne

Dear Disappointed,
Well let me start off by saying that I’m disappointed too and I don’t even know your friend. I suppose we can all get over the fact that no one RSVP’s anymore, but thanking someone is really in a different sphere of the etiquette realm.
While I would love to tell you a text would suffice(it won’t), I don’t believe picking up the phone to tell you how much they enjoyed your thoughtful gift would have been too much of a strain. A note in the mail would be even more thoughtful(note dear readers that personalized stationary is a must), but I suspect that as your friend is telephonically challenged, you would be better off spending your money and postage on martinis in the future. For you that is.

A peek inside.....

This dear readers, is a peek inside another extremely lady like Melbourne gal's wardrobe,
Miss. Sian Darling.
After her lending me these clothes for various events, I was so intensely curious that I will be doing a profile on her and an interview in the coming weeks.
Old, new, designer, not to mention amazing vintage, I'm sure you will be as impressed as I was upon discovering someone with an eye for true vintage and style.

Designers for Target: Collette Dinnigan

I don't believe this range was as hyped up as say the frenzy that surrounded the Stella McCartney launch, or the Zac Posen collection that was only released here a couple of weeks ago. But it can't go without notice because its one of Targets best quality Designers for Target ranges released yet, and it is of course bought to us courtesy of one of Australia's most prominent designers.
I was quite amazed that I could actually get my hands on some of it, truly expecting to arrive at Target and see empty racks and the odd, forlorn 16C sitting all alone waiting for someone to claim it.
For my darling overseas readers, I have included pictures from the D.F.T website so you you can discover how lucky we are to get someone like Collette Dinnigan on board, and I truly hope that Australian women embrace this range. It is always thrilling to see Australian designers made accessible to those of us that don't have the budget for exclusive designer clothes, but obviously have an eye for detail and quality.
I would love to hear what you think of the range and if you've bought any.

Frequently Asked Questions....

To put your mind at ease, here are just a few of your questions answered:
Who is your photographer?
I take all of the photos myself. There is no mysterious, good looking, brooding, photographer boyfriend in the background, just me and my beloved Canon.

Do you really get all the clothes you say you do at opp-shops?
Yes!

How do you find all of the clothes you do second hand?
I think this will require its own post some time in the near future, but to answer it quickly I have an unnatural measure of patience when it comes to shopping for vintage and will look through every rack, box, pile or display cabinet for a little piece of gold.

Are you from Melbourne?
Yes of course, I'm Lady Melbourne.

Emerald City

I've not yet worn this little jacket since I bought it, but I dug these gorgeous Kurt Geiger shoes out and I think I've found my solution.
The skirt is a beautiful vintage Pierre Cardin number that I picked up at the Don Bosco opp-shop just near Savers in Brunswick. God bless all the Nonna's in the area that donate these un-worn gems.
The shirt is vintage Laura Ashley and I treasure is although its falling to bits.

LADY MELBOURNE'S RULES OF CIVILITY

Dear Lady Melbourne,
My boyfriend is critical of my taste in shoes. What should I do?
Jane, N.Y, New York

Dear Jane,
This is not so hard. The man is a monster! Even though he should perhaps get credit for noticing, (He's not gay is he? If he is, that is even more serious - for you, that is) - dump him! Lady M will put up with a lot but this is intolerable! Though, on second thought, this may be a little harsh for you dear Jane, so given that I'm assuming you have good taste, ignore him.

LADY MELBOURNE'S RULES OF CIVILITY

Dear Lady Melbourne,
This morning on the train to work a lady poked me in the back by way of flexing her fingers that were hanging onto the pole that I was leaning against.
In a crowded morning train there isn’t a lot of room to move, and she clearly had enough room to hang onto the pole but mustn’t have liked how close I stood to her. She had just entered the train to only travel 2 stops as it turned out, I had been on the train for 20 minutes and not managed to disturb anyone.
After the second ‘poke’ and some rude muttering under her breath I realised the point she was trying to make and shifted uncomfortably.
Was I obliged to move just because she didn’t like where she was standing?
I didn’t say anything but felt embarrassed and am left wondering who the rude one is in this situation.
From, Confused, Nth Melbourne.

Dear Confused,
People act in funny ways when they are in enclosed spaces, don’t they? From what I can tell this woman was agitated because she felt that you were perhaps encroaching on her right to hold onto something, but poking you was definitely not the right way of going about letting you know.
She was definitely the rude one in the situation, a simple tap on the shoulder and a polite, ‘Would you mind moving so I can hold on?’ would have sufficed. But, it’s a jungle out there on public transport!
Poor you for having to stand uncomfortably! I suppose you can just relish in the thought that she walks around all day poking people, and that clearly spells mental issues if you ask me.

Tea time with the ladies

At my place of work that I turn up to sometimes and shuffle papers around, no body knows that Lady Melbourne exists.
So when I was given this tea cup as a present from a gal at work who told me that the ladies printed on it reminded her of me and the way I dress I was secretly tickled inside because they are well, so lady like.
Second installment of this post will be me sourcing the outfits you see on the cup.

Colour Joy

So this is what I wore today:

I'm not particularly 'good' at patterns and bright colours. You can probably tell by now that I like blocks of colour with the odd subtle pattern thrown in, and its generally vintage and generally small.
So when I found this dress I um'd and ah'd about it for a while, until I couldn't escape its stained glass window appeal. It needs altering, and I probably shouldn't have put it up until that's been taken care of, but I just couldn't help myself, I'm feeling confident that this is a bright, patterned dress I'll actually be able to wear.

p.s- its from Savers, is pure silk, hand made and cost me $10.
