I got chatting the other day to good friend and fellow blogger, and amongst other things she expressed to me that whilst trying new things (ie wearing lashings of colour) is fab, sometimes there is nothing wrong with what you know and love.
So while I will continue to experiment with colour for summer, lets get back to some Lady Melbourne basics shall we?
Step 1: Vintage dress
Given to me by the delightful Diane at Clara Fox, any gal worth her weight in lady like gold needs a good quality, well fitting vintage dress. Pick a period that suits you and go see an expert- second hand is not vintage.
Step 2: Grooming
For god sake wash and comb your hair, there is no other lady like way about it!
If you aren't into manicures then clean, trimmed nails is better than nothing. Mother Melbourne always told me that as long as you have clean hair, teeth and nails you can step out of the house wearing (almost) anything.
When you meet people for the first time you smile and shake hands, so it's logical that you would make sure your teeth and nails are clean.
Step 3: Accessorise
Well really there are no rules here because there is so much out there. Flowers, gloves, anything Chanel(c'mon you have to allow me that!), pearls, heels, clutches- the lot!

So there you go, not that hard really!
In other LM news a reader alerted me to that fact that I've been featured on the Spanish Elle website.
I had no idea, as the author of the fab blog 'The Devil Wears Zara' didn't link back(naughty!), however it is lovely to be included, specially as the post is about capes. I was having a 'Madeline' moment in this pic I think, which is quite old.
Thank you Lilian for pointing it out!And don't forget, today is your last chance to enter Lady Melbourne's Holiday Thrift Gift Competition.

You are beautiful! Enough! :D

Mother Melbourne gives solid advise.
Congrats on Spanish Elle 'shout-out', shame we can't get the same kind of love from local magazines :(
You look splendid! The gloves are such a lovely touch. But I'm wondering what shoes you're wearing with that?
And OMG THAT CAPE! I want one like that, it's so chic!

Spanish Elle? How lovely! And I agree with Matt, we definitely need some more local media love.
I think you capture the Melbourne asthetic so beautifully. Go with what you love and know suits you, but never stop evolving. That way you will be forever stylish (just as you are now).
xx
Methinks the local mags are a little too threatened by the power of the blog!
You look lovely, and your mother is very wise.
Bee-yoo-tee-ful.
You look so beautiful!!!! I love that giant flower fascinator on you.
Hi LM.
Beautiful photos. And I want that amazing flower!
Kathy
I'm going to start using Lady Melbourne as an adjective. If it were in the dictionary it would say:
Lady Melbourne (lay·dee meh'l·born)
–adjective
1. tastefully fine or luxurious in dress, style, design, etc; those stockings are quite Lady Melbourne.
2. gracefully refined and dignified, as in tastes, habits, or literary style; that woman is very Lady Melbourne.
ummm. That would be 'aesthetic' blast my silly non-spelling gene!
Beautiful! We are in a style tandem :) I wore a large flower in my hair ( except mine was blush) in a very similar way this weekend. The boy took pics so it will be my next post!
Your hair look beautiful styled this way and I love the rings over your gloves.
The photos are also really good.
Yay for featuring in Elle! How exciting for you :) I adore Elle - I read that it out sells Vogue now?! xxx
everything about this outfit is amazing! the gloves and accessories especially. Lady M, you really are at your finest.
oh and congrats on getting in spanish elle.
OOOh! I am so glad that you liked I mentioned it! I have been reading your blog for quite a while, and recognized you;-)
I started my blog in august, but due to university overload decided to stop it for now...

My goodness - you are so retro. Not just in your chose of clothes, hairstyles and accessories but in your general deportment, body language, facial expression etc - the whole damn vibe! I bet you looked just like that in your previous life! (You don't have any vague memmories or dreams of being a lady in the 1930's, 40's or 50's, do you? I'm quite serious here!)
I think this is my favourite post yet! The gloves, the flower...everything!
I can't agree more about the 'grooming' advice, nothing irks me more than dirty, torn nails and mistreated hair...yuk!
i love the flower in your hair! love the tips
Oh gosh, Lady M, these set of photos is just too lovely for words. The pure creamy lace dress and gloves offset by the grey flower...just gorgeous.
I love it when you hand out little tidbits of advice - it's so helpful for tomboyish people like me who always seem to miss the ladylike mark!
These photos are so gorgeous. You always look so polished.
