Whats Old is New Again

I thought about trying to make some of my vintage or second hand pieces look modern because sometimes his Lordship thinks I look like a Nanna. Which is fine because I wear clothes my Nanna would probably wear herself, but I am not the same age as her so it got me thinking about trying a little harder to make the look ‘younger.’It occurred to me after I took these that my two tone pumps might have worked better, but none the less this is attempt number 1 to make my 50’s circle skirt acceptable to people under the age of err, Nanna.I wonder whether this is a consideration for those of you who buy vintage or second hand clothes?I don’t much mind, in fact I don’t really care what other people think about the way I dress, I dress for myself but I didn’t realize it might age me in the process!

50's circle skirt: Episode
Heels: eBay
T-shirt: H&M
Jacket: Recut 1960's fabric from opshop I did myself.
Jewellery: My own
Bag: Salvo's

I think the skirt is very perfectly un-nanna, and the styling is very young, EXCEPT for the jacket which is the nanna-element here. In another outfit the jacket would be as young and fresh as a daisy, but here it's definitely bringing on the premature age. That said, I never think you look like a nanna usually, just an elegant young lady melbourne!

How interesting... I have to say, I really don't think any of your outfits age you or are nana-ish.

I do find different peoples reactions to outfits fascinating. Yesterday I was wearing a high waisted, pleated kneelength silver brocade skirt my mum made for me. The people I work with looked at me like I was insane but on my home I got many appreciative smiles and even a few nice comments. Different folks, different strokes I guess!

I'd never have thought of you as anything to do with Nana, but I guess longer skirts/conservative dress might imply that feeling.

However, given your super-satiny skin, your obvious young age, and that very sharp pair of shoes, I doubt there's a danger that anybody would think you're a nana.

Hmm... I don't really like the jacket with this outfit but I wouldn't have called the skirt at all nanna-ish. I guess that's why lots of people make hems of vintage dresses really short. personally, I think pairing with strapless tops do the trick well - Nannas don't usually have the arms for those!

I love the leangth! occasionally I will shorten a vintage skirt to make it younger and more "summery" - Plus I can use tha bit of left over fabric to make mysself something else!!

I think the heels make it look really fresh and current. They're very SATC.

I've always admired what I guess would be described as your 'mature' dress sense, but what I mean by that and how it sounds are completely different.

You're elegant, classy, composed and incredibly stylish and sexy Lady M, and these are things I associate with a mature dress sense. You don't look like a Nana though.

And yet you don't look like a lot of 'Young Girls'. You don't, for example, saunter around in Roxy minis and Supre boobtubes, which is what apparently classifies a young dress sense these days.

In any event, I <3 your style. Xx

The shoes are divine...and your style is not Nanna. It is YOURS....

well i think your blunt fringe is very indicative of our era. its such a 21st century look (although stolen from our primary school years - but thats the fashion cycle). You pull of nanna chic with the best of them LM. Lots of love. xf

I love the outfit, and the jacket is a great contrast with the skirt! Having a more sophisticated or elegant style certainly doesn't mean you look too 'old' you have great taste, but ITA with what you said in your post, you have to dress for yourself.

you look stunning and not nanna-like at all!

I think it's simply unusual to see someone as young as yourself dressed in such a ladylike way. Rather than your dress sense aging you, I think many young women don't have as strong a sense of style as yourself and are therefore swayed by trends, many of which can be unfortunate looking.

Stay you! You're inspiring xxx

I do worry about looking older sometimes when I wear vintage - but I have never looked at your outfits and thought 'Nana!' :) I guess longer hem lengths might be what prompt people to think of an outfit as being 'older', but I really like a longer hem - I know this is a different view from a lot of vintage-wearers, who seem to chop length off dresses regularly. I also think people confuse looking like a lady with looking older.

I'm rambling. In summary - you look lovely. :D

Recently I wore my hair all pinned up, revealing my naturally blond hair. A couple of people said I looked so much younger. This got me thinking about dressing/styling my age. I often dress like a "granny" (my husband's words... not mine!) He doesn't like my vintage clothing collection. For the most part I keep it young though. I think its a time where we can celebrate our youth. We'll have a lifetime to dress like older ladies:)
