So sad to say goodbye...

I had to send back my Telstra Next G phone and wireless card today which I had become quite addicted to, just as His Lordship predicted!
I loved, loved, loved the phone, Telstra said to me that I could write what ever I liked about the products as it was not paid advertising, simply a trial. I think we're all a little too viral-marketing savvy these days to realise the PR they are getting out of it, but I have to say that I have nothing but positive things to say about the service and the products they provided.
If you are offered a spot in their Blogger Outreach Program, my advice would be to take it.
It got me through fashion week and beyond and I even learnt how to use TwitPic so thank you for a month of technology Telstra!

Krrunching my way to Uniquely Singapore

So I have twittered about it, but I haven't officially announced it yet- I've been nominated in the category for 'Best Fashion Blog' in the Nuff Nang Asia Pacific Blog awards. Amazing!!

Your nominations put me there so I must say after three years developing the blog I am always grateful and humbled by your support.

Through your feedback I've worked hard this year to move the blog from a wardrobe look book to something with a bit more substance through more competitions and give-aways, the Lady Melbourne Designer Series, Fashion Week coverage and little stories set on the streets of Melbourne.

I really love Melbourne, I'm passionate about blogging and new media so it is with great honour that I accept the nomination and hope to do Melbs proud at the awards ceremony in Singapore this October.

If you feel inclined to vote just look to your right and you should see a voting panel- nice and easy!

Frocktober is almost here!

During the month of Frocktober I'll be frocking up in support of the festive fundraising initiative aiming to raise funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). The latest statistics across Australia are that, "one woman dies every ten hours from ovarian cancer." For many women with ovarian cancer, the disease is already well advanced when they are first diagnosed.

Unfortunately, there is currently no screening test for ovarian cancer. Frocktober aims to help improve the outlook for women with the disease by supporting the quest for a suitable early detection test, through fundraising for the OCRF.

Through fun – and sometimes quirky – measures, Frocktober is all about:
increasing the public's awareness of ovarian cancer and what it is

• promoting women's health & wellbeing

• celebrating the great diversity of shapes, sizes and colours women come in.

Essentially, Frocktober puts forward a challenge to girls, women and interested men far and wide: To don a frock for a day, week, fortnight or a full month during October, and get sponsored for it!

So I will be wearing a dress every single day in October, and posting the results daily here on www.ladymelbourne.com.au.

Now that you know what I’ll be up to during Frocktober, there are several ways to sponsor me:

Sweet

I don't think I can bring myself to eat this divine toffee apple- partly because it just looks so beautiful but partly because I think I'd be sick. I've already eaten my way through one show bag, the other is staring languorously at me from the kitchen bench.

I haven't been to the show since I was about 11, so I set about buying all the things I used to have as a child when my parents would take my brother and I.

I bought him a Phantom comic showbag, myself a Kewpie fairy doll, toffee apple, fairy floss and of course, a Bertie Beetle show bag. I had soooooo much fun!

In other news, I have made the final nominations of the Nuff Nang annual Asia Pacific blog awards. I am super, super excited about this, it's the first major award for the blog and after three years at it I am really proud.

Kewpie dolls galore....reminded me of my childhood so much, I couldn't believe they were still being sold!

A day in the life....

As the last post about my adventures out and about in Melbourne was so successful, I though I'd share with you a typical Saturday afternoon.

His Lordship booked a little 'stay-cation' for us at the newly refurbished Grant Hyatt on Collins St-divine-and just like typical tourists, we took the camera everywhere we went.

Valentino, Valentino!

On Tuesday night I was a guest of Joy 94.9 fm's preview screening for Valentino: The Last Emperor.
Mark and I introduced the film and gave a short talk on the behind the scenes aspect of what goes into the production of Haute Couture. It was a little bit daunting standing up in front of a crowd, but as he reminded me, I blog and talk to plenty of people every day, I just use a different medium. Interesting point that may just fill another post!

So why am I telling about this fabulous film?!

Well, in conjunction with Hopscotch films I am very proud to present your chance to win one of 10 double passes to see the film, Australia wide.

All you have to do is leave a comment on this post and include the words, 'The Last Emperor.'
Comp closes Thursday September 24th, 5pm AEST.

Hay Lady

Yep, thats hay as in HAYFEVER which has hit me like a slap in the face. All this talk about how wonderful Spring is- it ain't when you look like a water fountain!

Here is my beloved bike, I got a couple questions last time I posted a picture so here

is a little Q & A for you:
Where did you get your bike?
I bought it from a friend who had it in her garage, covered in dust for $75.
Where can I buy one like it?
'I have no idea,' isn't particularly helpful(!) so I would suggest eBay or Gumtree.
Where did you get the wicker basket?
And of course I wear a helmet every time I ride, I just don't put it in my photos because try as I might it just doesn't look pretty.

Alabakov

Alabakov designer Stephanie Carello

# 93 Floral Jacquard cupcake skirt $180

During fashion week I had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful Melbourne based designers. It got me thinking about how great it would be to showcase some of the emerging talent we have here that may not be on the catwalk but is worthy of a mention.

So here I present to you the first in Lady Melbourne's Designer Series- Alabakov.
I spotted designer Stephanie Carello at a party wearing her cupcake skirt featured above and knew that I a/ had to talk to her and b/had to have the skirt.

Stephanie creates a capsule collection, releasing it on her website in the first week of each month. Once it is sold out, it's sold out, but it's a creative way for an emerging designer to get their stuff out there while keeping costs down.

Lady Melbourne readers are getting a sneak peak at her October and November collections as well that I predict will be sold out the minute they are up. If you want first dibs Stephanie recommends subscribing to her mailing list as members emailed the moment the collection is up.

You heard it here first!

OCTOBER

What were you like as a child? Quiet and reserved.

If you could be in any music video, what would it be? Hmmm...Fat Boy Slim, Praise You.

Whats on your bedroom/work room walls? Sketches and images of Emma Watson. I adore her!

Did you always want to be a designer? Yes, born to be one!

Whats your favourite perfume? Dolce an Gabanna light blue

Do you remember the first piece of clothing you ever designed or made? A skirt for my Barbie to match a skirt I had!

Chocolate or vanilla? Are you crazy....chocolate!

Whats your earliest memory? Barbie coming to my birthday...

What do you hope for the label? That I can reach people who love to make fashion their own. To see my stuff down the catwalk will be an awesome experience

If I wasn't a designer I'd be.... a lawyer! Haha... That's why I'm a designer!!

NOVEMBER

If you would like to be featured in Lady Melbourne's Designer series simply send me an email to ladymelbourne@gmail.com with photographs of your collection, a link to your website or online store and a brief bio.

Happy Friday take two

Happy Friday!

Sex and The City plays on Foxtel here in Australia continuously and lately they've been showing series 3 and 4 which are my favourites, along with the end of series 6(Carries clothes in Paris!).
In series 3 and 4 Carrie starts to wear more vintage, floral dresses and of course the flower corsage.
I was going to keep this dress to sell at the next Round She Goes market, but after watching an episode the other night where she is wearing a mauve, floral, vintage dress with huge gold belt I felt so inspired I decided to alter the dress and keep it.
I tried in vain to locate a picture of the dress but no matter how many SATC references I typed into google it turned up nix. I think I've narrowed it down to series 3, episode 37, 'Drama Queens.' If you know what I'm talking about leave a comment!
What I did discover however is the influence Patricia Fields and Carrie's wardrobe still holds, more than 10 years after the show began.
This is what my dress used to look like, I've lowered the neckline and taken the hem up. I might get sick of it which is not unusual for me(!), but as Spring has arrived in Melbourne it's sitting very pretty in my wardrobe.
Dress: Savers, $12. Read it and weep.
Leather heels: DFO Tony Bianco outlet
Necklace worn as belt: Vintage Chanel
Earrings: London market
Bracelet: Diva
