The Cullen: Lady Melbourne's latest staycation

This weekend, I was a guest of The Cullen in Prahran for the weekend to celebrate the opening of their newest hotel in The Art Series Hotel Group and I have never stayed in a hotel quite like it- I felt like I was staying at the home of a very stylish friend!

The basic premise is that each hotel is based uniquely on the work of an established Australian artist.

There is The Blackman, The Olsen which are yet to open, and The Cullen. Each room is individual, and there is artwork by the artist(in this case Adam Cullen) on virtually every surface, of every room.

Anyhow, I decided to try and pack everything I needed into my Oroton bag above because it is technically a 'weekender' but it proved a little more difficult than I thought because I stupidly didn't factor in all the shopping I would do!
I managed it by taking things that would mix and match easily and can you believe it- I only took two pairs of shoes with me. It's true.

I managed to fit all my cosmetics in my brand new Borne Naked pouch which is now coming everywhere with me. I've emptied it of my makeup but replaced the contents of my bag so when I am rumaging through I no longer have to wonder why I fish out the TV remote or a tube of toothpaste as I did last week. VERY EMBARRASSING. My coffee date who is no doubt reading this will be laughing their pants off, I looked quite mad.

There was a lot of 'OH MY GOD!!!' when I walked into the room.

They give you a little art kit when you check in. Divine!

Blogging, blogging and more blogging....

If you come to Melbourne and want to have a unique dining experience, you have to go to Borsch Vodka and Tears on Chapel St. I implore you, it is one of my favourite restaurants. If I could somehow reach through the computer and feed you the chevapcici or potato blintz I swear you would be booking your flight quicker than you can say 'pass the sour cream.'

That's sour cherry vodka and a local Rose to wash it down with, yum!

There are piles of books in the rooms on fashion, art and typography and if you like you can buy them and take home with you. I've never seen that in a hotel before!
Like I said, there is art work on pretty much every wall and surface in the hotel, I'm in the foyer.

Yep, just hanging out with a mosaic cow, you know how it is....

I had the most wonderful weekend and I'm really pleased to show you a piece of Melbourne that you might not otherwise find if you are travelling to this great city of ours. I'm often asked by people coming to Melbourne where the best places are to shop and stay, and The Cullen gets a big thumbs up from me.

Black Out

I bought this dress in town at a rather non-descript shop and chopped off some rather ugly straps over the shoulder that is now strapless.
I love glossy, shiny eyes, but they are extremely hard to wear. I popped some Bobbi Brown lip gloss on top of my black, black lids and I love the effect, but it would never last a night out!

Don't forget that you have one more day to enter the Dreaming of Dior book give-away that ends tomorrow.

Lady Melbourne's Beauty Regime: Face

I don't fit a lot of beauty into the blog, but not because I'm not obsessed with it, mainly because I don't have time and it's not the focus.
However, I do get asked all the time what I use on my skin, so I thought it was high time I did a comprehensive post about my daily/weekly skin care routine.

Mother Melbourne has such sensitive skin that she uses Johnsons Baby shampoo, washes her face with water and moisturises with Nivea. She has beautiful skin, and that's the example I was given growing up. Skin care doesn't have to be complicated or expensive, you just have to find products that work for you.

Added to that:
No smoking
Drink plenty of water
No sun baking
Plenty of exercise

I won't get all holier than thou on you because I have broken every rule above over the years(yes, every rule!), but I do live by them now and it has improved my skin 10 fold.

Ok, here we go!

STEP 1: Weekly Exfoliation
I use a product by the skin care range 'Uber' called Pure Gel Exfoliant. There are no granules, it's a gel that works in a similar fashion to micro-dermabrasion. Once a week is all you need, you will quickly see after massaging it into your skin the dead skin slough off. I wouldn't do this every day!

STEP 2: Twice daily face wash
I developed oily skin when I was about 11, and had acne well into my teens and beyond. Hard to believe but it's true and I suffered with it for many years.
I discovered Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Face Wash when I was 16 and I've used it ever since. Although I don't have acne now, it still works for my skin and I use it in the morning, and to take my makeup off at night before bed.

STEP 3: Vitamin E oil to combat ageing

After washing my face I dab on Invite E pure vitamin E oil just under my eyes. You don't need much as it's highly concentrated.

STEP 4: 30+ Moisturiser everyday

I do not leave the house without 30+ on my face. I repeat, I DO NOT LEAVE THE HOUSE! I can't stress how important using a moisturiser with 30+ minimum is to protect your skin from sun damage, the risk of skin cancer, not to mention as an anti-ageing device. I use either Hamilton or Olay Complete Defence 30+ moisturiser.

And finally......my face!
Here it is, no makeup, no photoshop. This is what my face looks like everyday before I apply any make up.

I hope this answers some of your questions on my beauty regime, really I just use 3 products daily on my skin, and the exfoliation gel weekly. That's it!

Oroton Designer Studio: Lady Melbourne readers get it first!

Me and my 'Fortuna' bag, one of a couple of Oroton numbers I own.

Under the lock and key of their designer’s “studio” Oroton has a limited number of unique fashion bags, which they have been safeguarding since the 1970s and of which they will shortly open up to the public for the first time.

Some items are old popular favourites while others have never even made shop shelves because they were too expensive to produce in multiple quantities making them genuine one off items.

The designer studio will officially open its online doors, on Tuesday 24 November with a selection of one-off and limited edition items, including the Vogue V-50 clutch .
HOWEVER, there will be an opportunity to grab your piece of fashion history one day early just for Lady M readers, today, Monday 23 November. Following that, new products will become available weekly until Christmas.

Jacket: It was Mother Melbourne's in the 1970s, she had it made by a Melbourne Designer
Jeans: EziBuy Boots: Senso Diffusion

A little Peppermint party!

Thats me and Dr.Jones who try as I might, would not show her face on camera.

Yesterday I hosted a little party at 'Insert Name Here' boutique to celebrate the summer issue of Peppermint magazine and my cover.
Airdrie and Eva Q were on hand to keep the party going and I am ever so grateful that they offered up the boutique to use for the day. Thank you ladies!

It was a pleasant mix of fashion, bloggers and family with champagne flowing all afternoon and plenty of green cup cakes made by yours truly that morning. I was so over icing 80 cup cakes that you could tell they were homemade(!), but I was assured that they tasted yummy.

Thank you so much for coming to one and all that attended, it was a great way to catch up with people in person than 'on-line' which is so often the case these days!

There are more photos coming from the photographer Patrik Nemes, I'll update this post when I get my hands on them.

Mark Pace and moi
Joyce from Mel: Hot or Not, and Alex from Ecofashionista

Nicole from Planning with Kids and her sister

Lisa, Angela and me
Kelley the editor of Peppermint Magazine's sisters Casey and Nicky.
That's His Lordship making his debut appearance on the blog taking our photo.

Check out my phone crystalised by Mayumi K!

Last week I met up with the lovely Mayumi from Mayumi K Crystal Decoration and handed over my phone for a couple of days for her to work her magic. After flicking through her website I had a feeling that it was going to be great, but when she handed it over yesterday I jumped up and down on the spot. It's really hard to show just how sparkly the Swarovski crystals are in the photos but the phone is AMAZING and I love it!!
Thank you Mayumi for doing such and incredible job, I love, love, love my new phone!
