Summer Days

I haven't put up photographs with a film like quality in a while but it's really my favourite style of photography.
Mother Melbourne bought me this fan to use when it's hot and I usually forget to take it anywhere useful with me, but it makes quite a good prop if I do say so myself.
I braved the sales today with His Lordship but most of the shelves had been ravaged on boxing day and there was seldom little left but XL's and weary looking sales assistants. I got a pair of grey jeans and a lovely silk top from Country Road and am on the hunt for a killer necklace to wear to a wedding next week. Something in amethyst, something show stopping, something that sparkles. I found a necklace in Swarovski for $1000 but I don't have $1000 and even if I did I wouldn't spend it on a necklace. I could make it myself and that's my problem-it's the first thing I think when I shop for accessories.

I'm giving myself two more days of shopping for it and then I'll be setting about to make my own.

Dress: Bugis St market, Singapore
Earrings: Diva

Christmas Day Outfit

Christmas day normally involves flying across the country for me so I always plan to wear something dressy but comfortable. I think this skirt allowed room for two serves of turkey!

I'm heading to the sales tomorrow, I hope it's calmed down a little because I've heard it's been crazy. I have a wedding soon so I'm on the look out for accessories. Always accessories!

I have discovered this fab new website where my shoes are from too, big discounts on gorgeous shoes.

Silk top: Camberwell market
Skirt: Made by Lady M
Heels: from here
Necklace: Valley girl
Watch: Second hand(and no, its not a J12!)

This divine black necklace came to me by way of another blogger, Retro Jet Girl, who read that I wanted one but couldn't find it on sale at Diva. I spied it when Harbourmaster and I went shopping one day and decided I had to have one.
She had two, so she sent me one!

Here she is wearing hers and looking absolutely stunning:

All your Charlie and the Chocolate Factory dreams coming true.....

Green & Black’s got in touch recently to let me know that they have joined forces with Gorman clothing about a very cool little competition they are running in store at the moment.

Every customer who makes a purchase at Gorman’s throughout December will be presented with a bar of Green & Black’s organic chocolate. Hidden amongst the samples, are five lucky tickets, for the chance to win the ultimate wardrobe; $1500 of Gorman vouchers and a gourmet hamper chocked full of Green & Black’s chocolates.

As part of the collaboration, bespoke Christmas tree installations decorated with handcrafted ornaments from recycled Green & Black’s wrapping will appear in Gorman boutique windows across Australia this Christmas.

Suffice to say, my Christmas dollars have quite possibly been spent trying to win myself some chocolate!

My Christmas Tree

We don't really have a traditional sense of a 'tree' at the manor, I love cherry blossoms so I just decorate them.
I guess the bird is like a substitute angel, and I like that it sits amongst apples and pears.

It might seem silly but I love it and it makes me so happy to look at it!

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas: Day3

I think you are going to see this bag more than you might like, but since I got it from H L as an early Christmas gift I can't stop wearing it.
I hope you found yesterday's little gift guide helpful, I made a pledge in Peppermint magazine that I would hand make this years Christmas gifts(I know the lollies were cheating!) and I've really tried my best. I did it last year for Christmas, mainly because I was broke but the response was amazing. Everyone loved the fact that I'd taken the time to make the gift, rather than buy it. It sort of set me on a path of trying this year to make a big effort to make as much as possible.
Anyhow, hope the week isn't too crazy for you!

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas: Day 2

Above are some darling pastilles that I bought from a shop in Carlton, if you look closely the address is on the bag. They were about $7.95 from memory and are so perfect as a stocking filler, Kris Kringle, or 'just because.'

I thought I'd just show you some of my thrifty gift ideas for Christmas as I'm on a campaign to make as much as possible this year.

I think if you put a lot of love and care into making simple gifts that look great most people love them.

So this is quite possibly the easiest and prettiest gift you can do yourself.
Buy soaps from where ever you like really and wrap them in Japanese rice paper, or old heavy duty wrapping paper. I like the 'old' effect that it gives the little packages.

Soap: $1.00
Paper: $2.95
TOTAL: $3.95

While searching for interesting paper I came across this sheet for $1.00 at a news agency. I love the blue bird and isolated I thought it would work well in a frame.

As with the soap, you can buy frames from pretty much anywhere. Even vintage frames can look great if you paint them up.

Rice paper or interesting wrapping paper can look superb framed up as a house decoration. If the person doesn't like your taste in paper, they can simply change it.

Paper: $1.00
Frame: $11
TOTAL: $12

And of course, when all else fails, you can always bake. I make Lebkuchen herzen every year at Christmas to give away. I have not seen a disappointed face yet!

Happy Friday....just!

Happy Friday y'all, I've only just made it with about 30 minutes to spare but I've barely been near the computer in the last two days.

Last night was the Nuff Nang Christmas party and it was lovely to catch up with Alicia and Hayley amongst many other Melbourne bloggers. We're lucky to have a really cool scene here in Melbourne where anyone can come to these parties, not just fashion bloggers but anyone that blogs.

I'm going to be in Adelaide really soon, not for long, but long enough to discover your shopping gems. I've had a few comments about where to dig around so if there is anywhere else you think I need to visit let me know. When ever I go there I manage to come home with shopping delights so I'm looking forward to this visit.
Anyhow, back to today's post(!), you know I'm mad on accessories and this is His Lordships Christmas present to me sitting on my lap. We're in love, can you tell?
I bought the necklaces at Valley Girl I think, ridiculously cheap and now I feel guilty as hell for not ploughing my money into a local designer. After running my own label for 7 years I know how hard it is to compete with the likes of Diva so I always get the guilt's when I find something cheap and cheerful in store.
Do any of you boycott places like that? I'd love to know if you can resist!
Jacket: Vintage, was Mother Melbourne's when she was my age. Ta mum!
Necklaces: Valley Girl
Bag: Sirrico
Heels: Urban Original, US
Watch: Second hand

Book Club

I got home with an hour to spare to finish 'Juliet, Naked,' by Nick Hornby before dashing off to book club. I can't say whether I really liked it, I think my mind will be made up after a couple of glasses of wine and a good long chat about it.
Have you read it?

It's almost my turn to suggest a book so if you have any ideas throw them my way. I was thinking that it might be better to choose a new release book, with the hope that no one had read it. It's always hard with book clubs to come up with something that not everyone has read. Or re-read for that matter.
I noticed Sonya Hartnett's, 'Butterfly' which looks great and was released earlier this year, I'm still finishing Dracula so I haven't made it entirely to 'books published in 2009' yet!

Monoxious comes to Melbourne

Yesterday Arissa who is one half of the well known Singaporean blog team Monoxious visited Melbourne and along with a couple of other bloggers I had the pleasure of showing her around.

I didn't have a lot of time because I was working, but I managed to fit in a visit to Marais and Somewhere boutiques, then a spot of lunch.

Mr.Gadget, quite possibly the trendiest geek blogger in town.

Inside of Marais.
When I went to the opening of Somewhere boutique I met Gustav and promised I would come back and take some photos when there were clothes in the shop. It wasn't really feasible to have the shop stocked when it was full of people partying, so I was interested to see what was on offer. There is a mix of Scandinavian and local brands like Cheap Monday, Dr.Denim, Sosume and Secret Squirrel to name but a few.
They are having a sale starting boxing day too, you heard it here first!

State of Play: Blogging v.s Fashion Heavy Weights

Tavi the 13-year-old blogging sensation seems to be the line in the sand for fashion editors and bloggers alike at the moment.
Is she a teenage savant, or team Tavi as Anne Slowey from US Elle put it so eloquently?
And why are fashion editors sitting up and taking fashion advice from 13-year-old girls?

The issue has raised questions on children in the media, exploitation and the fashion packs obsession with eternal youth. Bloggers all over the world have thrown their hat in the ring, because Tavi who started her blog when she was 12 has managed to attract the attention of some very serious fashion heavy weights.

Last night I sat down with Scott Schuman to talk blogging while he is in town to spruik his latest book, ‘The Sartorialist.’

"The thing with teenage fashion bloggers, is that they’re little girls trying to be 30 year old fashion editors. You can’t grow a blog without original content or by pulling images. It’s just not enough."

Schuman meets me with a blank look when I mention his children in relation to his thoughts on young people gaining so much media attention. Perhaps the topic is ‘off limits,’ but it’s an interesting notion to consider the opinion of one of the worlds biggest and most recognised fashion bloggers.

"It would be more interesting to consider the dynamic of who her friends are. I mean, what do they think of this girl who dresses all crazy?" he tells me when I quiz him on just why fashion editors seem obsessed with the likes of teen blogger Tavi or 8 year old The Littlest Dandy.

"I have the freedom to shoot what ever I want. I can provide original content and have complete editorial control over the images I create. These kids don’t, I think that editors are just finding something to write about with an interesting angle. Children blogging!"

Considering the state of flux that mainstream media is facing at the moment with advertisers moving dollars online, and readers changing their viewing habits, it’s a question worth posing to the man behind what Time magazine selected as one of it’s top 100 design influences.

"I get requests for people to use my images, and I’ll let them use one or two, but you’ll never be able to grow a blog or make it a real business if you can’t inspire people. Tavi will never be able to grow without original content."

For those not in the sartorial know, Schuman started his blog 4 years ago on the streets of New York to showcase what he saw as every day people with great style.

"When I worked in the fashion industry, I always felt that there was a disconnect between what I was selling in the showroom and what I was seeing real people (really cool people) wearing in real life," his biography tells us.

Fast forward to 2009 and the launch of ‘The Sartorialist,’ a compilation of Schuman’s most memorable photos from his travels over the last 4 years.

"What still inspires me? Colour, posture, attitude or the light can inspire me. For me it’s more about the photographs and the feeling I’m trying to create, most people wouldn’t believe that it’s not always about the fashion."
